WHAT IS A Wi COLUMN?

Wi Columns provide lateral structural support for infill blockwork walls. They are a safer, stronger alternative to traditional windposts such as Ancon WP2, or WP3.

Using simple internal reinforcement within uniquely designed hollow blocks, Wi Columns maximise masonry wall strength without thickening the wall or adversely impacting on its appearance.

Wi Column blocks come in the standard UK format sizes of 100mm, 140mm, 190mm and 215mm wide x 215mm high and 440mm long.

SP – Standard Performance 

Wi Columns replace traditional windposts, angles and lightweight box sections for housing, hospitals, schools, colleges and commercial projects.

STANDARD PERFORMANCE Wi COLUMNS

(CAT 2 BLOCKS, C30 Wi MORTAR)

HP – High Performance

Wi Columns are primarily intended for large infrastructure projects to replace structural steel columns, box-sections or even reinforced concrete columns acting as windposts.

HIGH PERFORMANCE Wi COLUMNS

(CAT 1 BLOCKS, C40 Wi MORTAR)

Wi Columns can extend to heights of 7m – greater heights can be achieved subject to detailed design checks.

Our Wi Columns are a stronger alternative to any traditional wind post section on the market, which means there can be a reduction in the number of supports required.

Construction of a Wi Column is very straight forward and can be easily achieved by a competent bricklayer.

DESIGN

The number of Wi Columns required depends on the location of the wall, its height, length, width and any exposure to wind, or internal pressure.

A windpost/Wi Column would normally be designed by a structural engineer. To relieve designers of tedious repetitive calculations we have developed a free design program intended to function as a design aid to accelerate the assessment of Wi Columns subject to lateral loading. Architects and engineers please click here for more information relating to design and detailing.

However, for simple cases, such as the SP range, you can estimate the number of windposts required by using our Preliminary design tables (downloadable here). You can also contact us for a free design check and advice.

WINDPOSTS OR Wi COLUMNS?

Wi Columns are an elegantly simple, quick and intuitive alternative to traditional windposts. They improve aesthetics, air permeability, acoustics and thermal performance, providing maximum versatility during design/construction. High-risk handling operations are completely eliminated, so is the need for expensive secondary fire boarding or paint treatments. Our Wi Columns are 4-hour fire rated.
