Construction of a new household waste treatment centre for Essex and Southend-on-Sea. The Mechanical Biological Treatment Facility will treat all residual household waste generated in Essex and Southend, to reduce the environmental impact of waste being disposed of in landfill. The facility will process black bin bags of rubbish, extracting recyclable materials and treating the remaining waste.
Wembley Innovation has been involved with the lead Engineer, Atkins, from early in the design process. Due to the unique layout of some parts of the building, the WI System was selected as the most appropriate solution over traditional wind posts. The switch room walls have an exceptionally high loading requirement to retain any potential blast. There are double height, 40m long walls which form part of the visitor centre and it was essential that these were not broken up by columns; again, the WI System proved to be an ideal option.
